This page will be used to provide readers with educational and fun topics of interest. The topics will change periodically, so please feel free to contact us with your opinions regarding the information we present, or suggestions for other Topics.

 

SAFETY FOR SENIORS… AND FOR THOSE OF US WHO WILL SOON BE JOINING THEM:

 

bullet Provide good lighting throughout the home, especially next to the bed
bullet Use night-lights in bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways
bullet Keep flashlights near the bed and throughout the home for emergencies
bullet Have the batteries in the smoke detector changed when you change the clocks for daylight savings time
bullet Practice your escape route in the event of a fire
bullet Learn about the safest place in your home to go in the event of bad weather, such as tornadoes
bullet Pick up throw rugs and runners that are placed on top of the existing carpet (especially in the traffic paths throughout the home)
bullet Place telephone and electrical cords out of the traffic paths throughout the home
bullet Install non-skid rugs in the kitchen and bathrooms
bullet Consider raising the height of your chairs and couches with wooden platforms,  Contact your local Senior Services office to see if they have funds available to assist in offsetting the costs.
bullet Wipe up spills immediately
bullet Wear non-slip shoes and slippers
bullet Place frequently used items where they can be reached safely and easily (please don't stand on a chair to reach for things)
bullet Install handrails on both sides of the stairs if possible
bullet Have the water heater adjusted to a suitable temperature to avoid scalding
bullet Install sturdy grab bars in the tub, shower and next to the toilet
bullet Install non-skid tape or mats with suction cups in the tub or shower
bullet Avoid using bath oils or lotions in the bathtub
bullet Provide a copy of your medical history, list of doctors and medications to another family member or friend who does NOT reside in the home and can assist you ifyou cannot speak on your own behalf (See Medical History form below for your use.  Remember to review and update the form as needed.)
bullet Provide a copy of "Your Living Will" and "Durable Medical Power of Attorney" to the same family member or friend as well as your doctor
bullet If you do not yet have a "Living Will" and "Durable Medical Power of Attorney", consider getting started today so that your wishes will be followed if you cannot speak on your own behalf.  Forms are available at hospitals or with your Attorney.
bullet Many things affect our balance including Medications and our ability to hear and see
bullet Please see your doctor(s) to find out whether any of the prescription and over-the-counter medications you or your loved ones take might cause dizziness, drowsiness or unsteadiness
bullet Ask the doctor(s) to check to see you your hearing or vision might cause dizziness or unsteadiness
bullet Change positions from sitting up to standing up slowly
bullet If you feel lightheaded or dizzy as you begin to move, stay seated until the feeling passes; notify your doctor if needed
bullet Identity theft is becoming an ever increasing problem.  Make sure you are giving personal and financial information only to reputable sources that you can verify are legitimate
bullet Ladies: Don't display large sums of cash or leave your purse unattended
bullet Gentlemen: Don't display large sums of cash and try to keep the cash in your front pant's pockets or inside your jacket
bullet Please be sure to check behind the car before backing up
bullet Create a "Buddy System" with certain family member or friend and check in with each other daily
bullet *Wear a 24-hour Medical Alert button, if needed, to summon help
